Aloha,

This past weekend, I completed the "iMovie '11 Essential Training" tutorial at Lynda.com.  I followed the instructions and produced my first iMovie project.

The still images and video clips were provided by Lynda.com in the exercise files and the music is included in the iMovie software program. After I followed the instructions for editing the footage, I decided to add a voice-over in order to "fake" a Public Service Announcement for Hawaiian Surfing. The voice-over transcript came from Wikipedia. This is a learning project.

I edited the various elements - video clips, music, sound effects, narration as a way to learn how to use iMovie. This is part of my preparation for producing my own original PSA as part of my Detroit Future Media Major Media Project.

I learned a lot. I still have a lot to learn. And I have a LOT of questions about scriptwriting and using iMovie for video editing.

Substance over Style

The trend in this country and more disturbingly in other countries is that Style is more important than Substance. This has been trending up for decades and is evident in our films, television, writing and music. Although it is not absolute, the mass audience is acceptant of this. So, what does it mean and why is it a danger? What are the effects?

For this post, style can be defined as the decoration of a work, elements that do not enhance the story or ideas presented. Substance can be defined as the core ideas, story or messaging.

In films or television, style over substance is sometimes referred to as the popcorn theory.
The popcorn theory is basically the idea that a hollywood is more concerned with money than the story. You may think, "Ha, that's always been the case." it has not. Character development, structured sub-plots and dynamic dialogue are fading at a fast rate. The computer generated imagery (CGI) is a major reason. Special effects are expensive, but they bring in crowds of popcorn munching viewers. Hence the name of the theory. This is money. Far fewer numbers go to see a dialogue film. And the result is that even an independent filmmaker is reaching for the effects film. Look at every hollywood film, almost all have CGI, even if its just for enhancing the image.

Well we are not aiming for hollywood, so why is this a concern? It is the conditioning of the audience that is a concern. People's attention spans are decreasing, there willingness to sit and listen to two people talking is decreasing. That effects us all. Obviously, other technologies have something to do with this as well, i.e. smartphones.

Music is another industry effected. Talentless pop "artists" are popping up everywhere. Their clothes, makeup , sex appeal and so on are much more important to record sales than the quality of their voice.

My concern with this is that this is what is being exported to other countries. Music TV in other countries is focused entirely on appearance, eye candy. The songwriting and crafted voice traditions are not. Therefore, some may jump directly into the style without a tradition of substance. Or worse, abandon their traditions to be more like us.

There is nothing wrong with style. I just think that one should start with a strong base, one that is primarily substance. And bring in your style with subtlety, as long as it is your style.

Please add your voice to this post,
What films are your favorite? Why? Is it Substance over Style or Style over Substance?
What about your own work?

The writer's voice

These are just some things I sometimes think about or explore when writing; nothing academic, just noting thoughts.

Part I: A Movie is more a mirror than a window:

Thinking of a film or video as a window into another world has been a staple convention, however; that is helpful more for the audience than the writer. The world experienced is your own. As a writer you are putting yourself, your experiences, beliefs and so on onto the screen. How does this help you as a writer? Don't fight it, use it.

In the Essentials of Screenwriting Richard Walter suggests that even Star Wars was packed with George Lucas' life a reflection in a way. Luke (the protagonist) can be said to be Lucas himself. The names are too similar to be accidental. Vader's name (the antagonist)  is a derivative of the German word for Father. Vader is Luke's father. That relationship is a reflection of Lucas' relationship with his father. So the mirror is found in unexpected places.

From this, you should expect to put your guard down, not worry about what you put in to a script that is personal or odd, but just write. Write from what you know and who you are. That makes for the richest content.

Also, a side note: one should also write in their surroundings, tools, contacts, dog etc. This relates to budget and manageable production.  If I have a grand idea for a script that includes a chase scene, I have three options. One is to just write it and not produce it. Two, is to write it and hope for funds to make it and spend endless hours. Or three, write the chase scene as a bike chase, since my friend owns a bike shop and I can shoot the scene in my neighborhood.

BTW that book is available for check out

Please share your won thoughts in the comments or post

Coming up....

Part II: The pen is mightier than the sword

Part III: You're your own audience

Part IV:  Substance over style
